About The Book Depository

The Book Depository (BookDepository.co.uk) is the UK’s largest dedicated online bookseller - working to offer the largest range of titles in the world, available for dispatch within 48 hours. Founded in 2004 to make ‘All Books To All’ they focus on selling ‘less of more’ rather than ‘more of less’, differentiating themselves from other retailers who increasingly focus on bestsellers. Having forged unique publisher and supplier relationships, they have the ability to dispatch over 6 million titles within 48 hours with free worldwide delivery, enabling customers to find the books they want. They are one of the world’s fastest growing booksellers, with sales in excess of £100m, dispatching over 200,000 parcels a week worldwide. In November 2011 The Book Depository was acquired by Amazon.com, Inc.

About Our Developer Role

We are looking for incredible developers with a sound understanding of the fundamentals of Computer Science and practical experience building large-scale web applications. You should be somebody who enjoys working on complex system software, is customer-centric, and feels strongly not only about building good software but about making that software achieve its goals in a business setting. Our ideal candidate will have a degree in Computer Science (or equivalent), supplemented by professional software development experience.

This role is responsible for helping design, develop, test, deploy and maintain next generation websites for The Book Depository. After building several generations of our website in PHP, we plan to use a Java Spring platform for our websites from 2013 onwards. We are looking for developers with solid industry experience who can partner with our UK development staff and take a leading role in the adoption of new technologies. In addition to playing a key part in our website migration, our new developers will join projects to extend our international capability, integrate with Amazon and third-party eCommerce services, and enhance our BibDib semantic website platform and metadata management. Our developers collaborate with commercial, operations and technical teams in The Book Depository, along with technical teams across the Amazon group of companies worldwide.

Crucial to this is the ability to provide outstanding service to our customers and internal users through the design, development and delivery of world class websites and applications, and offering proactive timely support for them. We run Scrum ecommerce development teams in our Windsor, UK office and additional development streams in our offices in Alexandria, Egypt.

Working in the website development team and using the Scrum methodology, the role is responsible for developing and enhancing a variety of systems from front end websites, 20+ million item catalogue systems, checkouts, order management systems to cutting edge web 3.0 semantic offerings.

The role is a senior one within the website development team, and the successful applicant will mentor and provide technical support for junior developers on the team. As such this is an outstanding opportunity for a candidate with the right attitude to accelerate their career as part of the broader Amazon technical community.

The right candidate will understand the importance of analysing problems and designing solutions and will use the wealth of technical, creative and commercial experience in the team around them to achieve this.
